Hello,

First, excuse any mangled or incorrect terminology that follows.

I am renovating an old workshop and converting it into a multi-purpose finished room. I recently removed the 1/4" plywood that was serving as a ceiling, revealing 2x4 ceiling joists @ 24" oc.

I am kicking around a couple ideas, one of which is to remove the ceiling joists all together (they are simply sitting on top of the headers or top plates). My question then is, can I simply add drywall to the inside of the roof rafters? The pitch of the roof for this room is very interesting and I think this would be pretty slick. Roof framing is also 2x4 @ 24" oc.

Common sense tells me this would be ok, but it also tells me I may be under-thinking it a bit.

Let me know if pictures would help.

Pictures might help. How big is the room? What supports the rafters?

Drywall can add a significant amount of weight. Also a 2x4 rafter doesn't allow enough room for sufficent insulation. R-19 would be a minimum insulation and requires almost 6" depth.
