I am building an entertainment center for a TV and audio / video components. The cabinet will be finished in oak and stained. I want to use plantation shutters as cabinet doors for the audio / video components so that I can let some air flow through and so the remote controls will work through the shutters. From what I can tell all wood shutters come in basswood. My question is, Can these basswood plantation shutters be stained to match the oak cabinet close enough that it will be unnoticeable (the different woods)? What is the best method to stain these shutters? Is it best to have the shutter company match the stain or are the shutters easy enough to stain for a do it yourselfer? I appreciate your feedback. Thanks - Ken

I'm not real familiar with basswood but the stain color can usually be duplicated with different spicies of wood. The big difference with staining different woods is how fast it will soak up the stain [softer woods will stain darker] and the look of the grain.

When matching dissimiliar woods I always like to have some scrap wood to test stain on. Since you are buying the shutter/doors premade I would suggest staining them first and then work on getting the stain color to match on scrap pieces of oak.

painting and/or staining shutters is pretty much a nightmare with all the slats & moving parts. i'm not even sure you could order them unfinished.

i would order them in the already factory stained color you want and focus on staining your entertainment center to match.

Shutters can be bought unfinished. Not overerly difficult to stain but both sides pretty much need to be done at the same time to prevent blotches of stain on the other side.

basswood is a very cheap, very soft wood so it shouldnt be fairly difficult to match them up.

Soft woods tend to stain darker than hardwoods. Depending on the stain color used you may want to use a conditioner [wash coat] first.
