While cleaning out my storage shed, I came across several old cans of paint and wood stain. What is the shelf life of this stuff?

The lids are rusted on the paint, but they have been stored outside, so I don't know if this is a good indicator of the quality of the paint left inside the cans. We moved into this house 8 years ago, so the paint is at least 6 years old, some older.

Thanks.

Paint in a sealed full container will last indefinetely provided it hasn't been exposed to extreme heat or in the case of latex, freezing tempatures. Partial cans tend to not last as long.

The true test comes when you open the can and stir the paint/stain. If it mixes well, it is fine to use. If latex paint is thick [like mud] it has froze and is no longer usable.
