I have a house that is over a hundred years old. It has central air and does a great job of cooling the first floor but not the second. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get more cool air up the second story?

The best solution would be to rework the ducts and add a second A/C unit, but it wouldn't be cheap. The next best solution is to add dampers to the ductwork so air going to the downstairs could be dampered down and more would be pushed upstairs.

Does the problem reverse in the winter (too cold down and comfortable up)? If so, you might install dampers on both upstairs and downstairs ducts.

I'm not sure if the problem is reversed in the winter. We just bought the house and have been living in it for only two weeks.

Turn your fan to on see if it helps.
