Hi All! Hope you can help!

Recently had some work done to my home, and a light fixture was removed by the contractor to complete the work.

Decided to purchase a new light fixture when work was complete, so told the contractor to leave the old fixture off.

Have since found a light, but am having problems with the wiring.

House wiring is as follows:
two black wires twisted together
two white wires twisted together
one white wire standing alone

Light fixtures has:
one black wire
one white wire

We tried connecting the light to the two black wire and two white wire combinations, which gives the light power. However, the light switch does not work with this combination.

Tried connecting the three white house wires together with the one light fixture wire, which gives the light and light switch power, but the switch immediately blew when we tried to turn off the light.

Am banging my head with what to do.

Many thanks for any assistance!!!

I believe you should do this;

connect the black wire on the fixture to the one single white wire. Connect the white wire of the fixture to the two white wires that are twisted together and then the bare wires together if applicable.

The single white wire is more than likely the "switch leg" .

If you have some sort of voltage tester you can confirm this by testing for volatgae on this seperate white wire with the switch in both positions. If it goes on and off with the switch, it is the switch leg.
