What ive always told friends where out of my immediate area and were looking for contractors is to contact a couple supply houses, ask for the manager and ask them who they would recommend, at that point "interview" them. Referances are never a bad thing to ask for and be sure to follow up on them, Ive seen some guys who had lists of referances that were nothing but dummy lists knowing that most people do not follow up.

Also ask around where you live. Who they call or use for heating and AC. They will tell you fast who to call and not call.
