I have to replace my 8 seer, 5 ton compressor. I have two supply ducts, one for upstairs, one downstairs. I am considering putting electric controlled dampers (themostats already in place). An HVAC guy recommended Lennox, said that to use electric damper system I would need a two cycle condenser, otherwise my coil can freeze and burn out the new unit. He said I would need a 15/16 seer rather than a more cost effective 13 seer. What are your thoughts on this?

Id say put in 2 systems in the home . You will be way ahead. We stay far far away from zone set up in homes.Even it you put in a two speed compressor. He is telling you like it is.
The best bet out today is go with 2 systems with a SEER of 15 or better. This you can get a $300 tax credit on. ALSO a V/S blower with a humidistat control on it to control the speed of the blower.
This way if one does go out you have the other one running

I wasnt going to replace the blower, wouldnt I still need a dampering system if I have 2 compressors and one new blower?

Like I said Id rework the duct work some and have two blower coil units and two high sides.
One set up for down and one set up for up. You sure cant just put a new highside there. On that old blower coil that had a 8 Seer. You have to have a new coil and blower.
