I mistakenly left a honeydew to ripen on an oil-finish oak chest. It over-ripened and the juice left a stain. Chest is already a problem because of a Butcher's wax buildup. What should I do? Suggestions accepted gratefully. Andy

I'm not an expert at oil finishes, but if you know what kind of oil it's finished with (usually boiled Linseed oil or Watco Danish Oil) you can clean the surface best you can with Naptha, and then resand that area with a random-orbit power sander. Start at 80 grit but be gentle in case it's a veneered item. Try to lightly grind out the fruit mishap (you may not get it completely out, just grin and bear it). Work your sandpaper grits 80-100-120-150 and finish with 150 sanding by hand with the grain of the wood (wrap some 150 grit paper around a sponge to do this).

Re oil the top, you may need to apply a number of coats. Linseed oil darkens some, but Watco Danish oil has gilsonite in it which will darken it a good bit after several coats.
