is it true that planting basil next to tomato plants keeps the bug away and that tomatos feed off carrots ?

I have not heard that one. I watch my tomatoes for bugs and treat then. I do know that tomatoes will pick up other flavors such as the heat from pepper plants. I am actually going to try planting some jalapenos near one of my tomatoes to see if I get a "salsa" plant.

Just a myth. Tomatoes aren't bothered by many pests although there are a few. You should be more concerned with disease prevention. Mulch the plants well and water from the bottom consistently.

With no disrespect to any of the other posters, basil will help to repel tomato hornworm. It also attracts honeybees if you let it go to flower. Carrots are good with tomatoes. Here's some good and bad companions.

Dsifer, are your tomatoes in pots? If they are 10' to 15' feet from the trunk they aren't in the ground, right? Maybe I'm seeing a large mature tree and it's just a young sprout or the plants are that far from the outer drip line. Walnuts give off juglone that inhibits the growth of most plants.

Are they english walnut or black walnut? I know black walnut trees cause a lot of problems.

Dsifer, the black walnut gives off more juglone then the others. If your tomatoes are wilting, even after watering, then the tree is causing problems. Take a look here.

I've never tried to grow tomatoes near a black walnut so I can't say for certain what will happen, but if you're already getting tomatoes, then it sounds like your plants will be ok. It can take up to 2 months before symptoms show in the plants. There are veggies that can tolerate the juglone and are safe to eat - squash, melon, beans and corn. The walnuts are also safe to eat, so eating the tomatoes will be safe.
