We are trying to salvage a home that was flooded during Hurricane Katrina. In order to gut the home which has been abadoned for the past 8 months we will need to remove the existing kitchen cabinets...the granite countertops will need to be stored until the house is resheetrocked, and new cabinets are installed. I don't want to break the granite in transporting and they will be placed in the garage until they can be re-mounted..Does anyone have suggestions for the long term storage...several months of granite to prevent breakage?

They are quite heavy and must be carried on edge rather than flat like a pizza. Have plenty of people on hand to carry and guide. Maybe tie some thick ropes around the slab to facilitate holding on and lifting. Store it with a rug under it and similar wrapped around it.
