Brass legs on a footstool are badly corroded-blue and white bumpy stuff. Maybe the dog has been peeing on them - he pees on everything, people, purses etc. but outside. If I can't clean them off enough I would paint them because I like the shape but I don't think paint would stick if I don't remove the corroded bumpy stuff. Help! Thanks. Joycy

You will need to determine if you have brass plate or solid brass. If it is brass plate, a magnet will stick to the steel substrate. Solid brass can withstand more abrasive cleaning than a thin brass plating.

Try using a brush with some catsup. The active ingredient here is vinegar but catsup is a paste type and will not run off. Let it sit an hour or so and then clean off. Good luck.
