I am switching from oil heat to propane, and I need to get rid of my old oil tank. It's above ground 250 gallons, and has maybe 30 gallons of Kero in it. I'd like to pump out the kero and take the tank to the county recycle center, but I don't know what to do with the fuel. Or maybe there are environmental restrictions that make diy difficult. Any advice?

You could check with one of your local fuel companies about dropping off the kero.

To get rid of the tank, you may need to cut it open and mop out any excess kero/sludge. I cut them apart with a recipricating saw and then drop it off at the local scrap metal yard. The last 275 gal tank I "sold" to the scrap yard I got $20 for. The scrap yards will not take tanks if they're not cut open and cleaned.

Hankhill,
Shoot man, I want to know what scrap yard you use. I get four or five bucks if they are in a good mood. Lucky if it pays for the saw blades.

NY State. Everything costs more here.
