I bought a 100 year old home that has five coal burning fireplaces that badly need insulated to prevent heat and a/c from escaping up the chimney. The summer covers are long gone. Someone told me to simply stuff regular wall insulation up the chimney at the firebox. I would just like advice on whether this is the best course of action...or is there a better way?

Don't just stuff insulation up the flue unless you want nests of small animals in the fall when you pull it down. I would look for the regular covers at antique stores, etc. Are you shutting them down permanently, or just for the season?
