I've been reading these posts in multiple forums for a while. I'm gutting my main bathroom and would like to put in a tile shower and floor. My subfloor seems to be different from a normal subfloor with joists.

The house was built in 1962 with a crawl space. The subflooring is 1 1/4 inch 4x8 panels. There are 4x6 beams spaced 4 ft supporting the subfloor. Is this enough to support ceramic tile?

As I understand it I'll need to put down backerboard over the wood subfloor using thinset mortar and then after taping the joints with more thinset lay the tiles using thinset.

TIA for any info.
