I just purchased my first home. It was built in 1919 and has great hardwood floors, with the exception of a bedroom that has purple-painted floors!
I'm not sure what type of wood the floors are. I have access to a refinishing machine, along with the assistance of someone who has successfully refinished UNpainted floors with this machine with great results. Would the machine take the paint right off in no time, allowing us to restore the natural wood? Or, am I looking at a complex procedure that I would be better off skipping and painting the floors a better color?

I would sand a little corner first to see what the wood looks like underneath the paint. If you like the wood, the floor machine will work fine you might have to clean the sand paper from time to time. It will clog the paper up and wont sand very good.
It also depends on how thick the paint is.
