How can you remove laundry soap residue that has been left on the lid of a washing machine and has dried on so hard it doesn't respond to normal cleaning?

I would imagine if you soaked the lid....and kept it wet for 10-15 mins it should soften it enough to scrape off with a plastic putty knife.

Docduck has a good idea. Keep in mind, this is only a cosmetic issue and could be ignored, if you so desire.

Continue to spray with white vinegar and water solution in an old window cleaner bottle. Mix about 1/4 cup with the water. Continue to spray and nudge off buildup with plastic spatula as the buildup of laundry detergent softens. Wiping lid and surrounding areas after completing laundry will keep surfaces dry and clean.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments and suggestions. I will get some vinegar and start wetting it down.
