After the plants are established, I use mulch on my garden - helps alot. Spreading newspaper under the mulch helps even more.

Is the ink from the newspaper harmful to the vegetables? Are they still OK to eat?

I just read in "The Lazy Gardener" to use those black plastic things (separators) in the ground. It acts as a barrier and doesn't allow grass to creep into garden areas. I think this is a more permanent solution to that kind of problem. Hope this helps.
