I am having a home built and the builder told me we was going to use 1/2 inch drywall on all interior walls. The drywall he is using is two 1/4 inch pieces over each other. Is this normal? Thanks

No that is not normal. Using 1/2" is fine but it comes in that thickness. You can only get 1/4" sheets in 8' lengths. And it is super flimsey. Even if you put 2 together your walls and ceilings will look like a roller coaster with about 250 butt joints. You need to straighten this out fast.

ThanksAre you sure your not looking at two 1/2" pieces sitting in the pile? They are shipped taped together on the ends but are then seperated for use. I can't think of any advantage to the builder to use two 1/4" pieces even if he was crooked. 1/4" is generally only used where you need to make curves and is not much if any cheaper then 1/2"

The only time I have seen a builder use 1/4" rock was when dealing with radius walls [curved] and then they usually install 2 sheets to get the 1/2" thickness. It would cost him more money to nail up double sheets on straight walls.

CJ - look at the paper end strip of the sheetrock before the two pieces are separated. It will tell you the size. I'll bet you a 6 pack it's 1/2".
Did you measure a tapered edge of the sheetrock. That's closer to 3/8" and it might look like 1/4".
