My neighbor has a Maytag gas dryer that is not working properly. The elctronic ignition works and the gas comes on and it fires up but only fires for 2 or 3 minutes and then gas shuts off for an extended period of time. I did notice in reading the manual that the gas flame should be mostly blue and hers appears to have alot of yellow. Could that be the problem? I am going to adjust the flame to see if that helps. If that doesn't work, does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be wrong??

Thanx, Rick The Handy Man

Okay - I adjusted the flame and it still is not right. When you first cycle the dryer on the gas fires but only stays on for about 45 seconds and then turns off. After that the igniter will glow several times on and off but NO gas and NO fire. Any one have any ideas as to what is the matter??

Thanx Rick

Your first post describes the burner short cycling and usually that is caused by an air flow problem. You state that the burner comes on and stays on for 2 or 3 minutes then cycles off. If the burner stays on that long and will cycle on again for the same amount of time I would check to make sure the vent is not plugged. Your second post says the ignitor cycles but the gas valve does not open up. Most likely the coils on top of the burner are at fault.

I'm not sure what you mean by "coils on top of the burner"? How do I recognize them and is there a way to check them to see if they are good? In the meantime, I'll try diconnecting the vent pipe to see if that helps. Thanks, Rick

Hello gnguru and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.

On top of the gas control valve is where the gas valves, sometimes referred to as solenoids are located. There will be two wire quick disconnects attached to the two separate solenoids. The entire gas valve usually has to be removed to remove the two solenoids from the top of the gas valve.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the most likely possible problem may be. They will need the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and problem resolving matters. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs or services. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a service or repair includes any connection of a gas part.

Read the existing questions on the subject of dryers. Doing so will more quickly provide you with answers to questions & provide additional information on how to resolve the problem.

DRYER SERVICE TIP:
It's always advisable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years. Or during any dryer maintenance and or repairs.
