I purchased an antique chandelier of bronze and alabaster. When it arrived, the bronze was entirely black. I am attempting to clean it with a paste of flour, vinegar, and salt, and this is working rather well. I think it will take more attempts. Once it reaches the finish I like, what can I use to protect the bronze from turning to black again? Perhaps a paste wax or a clear spray finish? I don't want to ruin all my work. Thank you.

Hi marie*dee
Welcome to the forums

I have not found a wax or spray that did not need to be removed yearly to re-polish the metal anyway
However, I am in an extremely humid environment

Perhaps if you are in a drier area, you may have better success
If that's the case, I'd recommend a wax
Although you may get more than a year out of it, at some point it will have to be removed to re-polish, and the wax is much easier to remove

Take care not to get wax on the alabaster. You can find bronze info on this website at http://www.doityourself.com/stry/bronze Wax will not offer a permanent cleaning solution. Note: Bronze is not intended to have a high shine. With oxidation, it typically acquires a green patina which is prized by many.
