I have a 1999 Maytag Neptune Washer MAH4000AWW, S/N 42304941WU. We never had any problems with it until this year. Recently, we have had numerous machine "events" - I am getting a little overwhelmed and hoping I can get some good insight and feedback.

1st: machine would quit when starting a new cycle and water pumping into machine was hot when I had it set at warm/warm. We checked out the machine control board (on top) and the timer. The timer motor had no continuity and the contacts on the cam for the washer motor were very burnt looking. We were hoping the machine wasn't controlling the water temp due to the machine control board.

We replaced the board and the timer. The machine runs through its cycles now. We are still having problems with the water temp, so we ordered a new water valve. In the meanwhile, I continued using the washing on the "cold/cold" setting.

2nd: I only saw series 10 and series 45, and from what I could gather, I was supposed to order down - not up.
We ordered a series 10 machine control board - is this the correct board?

3rd: the machine recently started making a growling/squawking/chirping noise (don't know how to describe it except that it reminds me of a belt slipping when under high torque) at start up or when the machine reverses motor direction. We can't replicate the sound by hand.

We checked the motor A,B,C phases according to the service manual - all checks out.
We have checked the rams, motor and pulley to make sure they are secure - looks ok.

Any ideas?

4th: around the same time that the machine started making the funny noise, a cycle didn't finish - there was still water in the tub, although the timer ran through to the end. We'll check the pump inlet and outlet just to make sure they aren't plugged up.

Your help (meaning anyone-everyone) would be much appreciated. Money quit growing on trees around here due to drought conditions ;-).

After working on machine last night.

We swapped out the water valve with new one, and the new one seems to be working ok.

We pulled the hoses off of the pumps and found some guitar picks hanging around. The water is draining out of the machine ok now.

The belt looks like it might have some wear on two outside ribs, so we flipped the belt over to see if that improves the noise we hear. If it does, we'll order a new belt.

Am still curious, though, as to whether the series 10 machine control board I purchased is the correct machine control board or not because when I ordered the timer motor, I had to order a series 11.

You need the 22002788 from what I can tell. If you had one of the kits with the new door boot, door liner and control board put in you would need the 22002989. The squeaking when the motor reverses direction is usually from the motor mounts or isolators I guess they are called. The new belts and motors come with hard plastic isolators. If you take the bolt out and slide the motor out towards the front the isolators usually stay stuck in the mounting holes in the tub. If yours are black rubber they is a very good chance that is causing the noise. Mine did it after about a year.

I totally spaced out including what the part number is of the new board I received: it is 22002989. The board came by itself. Looks like I must have the right one...and the machine seems to be operating like it did before. Yeah!

Since we flipped the belt over so that the wording on the belt is upside down instead of right-side up, I haven't heard any noise. One other thought that came to mind when we flipped the belt is that maybe the belt had somehow walk on the motor shaft a little and wasn't properly aligned (I am guilty of trying to wash a comforter recently that was maaayyybbeee too big for the machine). We may have made the noise go away when we aligned the belt after reinstalling it. Who knows - all I know is that it sounded like it was coming from around the pulley mounted to the drum. If it makes that noise again, we'll tear into it.

I am going to call this service call completed. Hopefully we won't have any more problems for awhile. I do know that my next machine will have an "on/off", hot/warm/cold and maybe a "delicate" cycle -- that's all. Hubby says the wringer washer and a tub...ya, who's doing the laundry? ;-)
