Is there a trick or formula, based on the height of the couch vs the end table height vs the torso/head height to determine how high an end table lamp should be. I am considering a pair of 23.5" Kichlers to replace some old 27" high end table lamps.

you don't want the end table to be higher than the sofa's arm (imagine a drink tipping & spilling - you don't want the liquid to just run right over the arm & into the cushions) or so low that it's difficult to reach anything on it from a sitting position.
and you don't want to be able to see the bare bulb inside the lampshade when you're sitting there.
