View Full Version : 6' h x 4' w gate: attach hinge to post or side of brick house?

My title says it all.

House is on the left, fence is on the right. Fence is over the driveway. At this point, I was expecting the gate to open outwards (if you're standing in front of the house) but I don't have a preference for whether it swings towards the house (thus, hinges on the house) or away from the house (hinges on the post).

If I attach to the side of the house, would I be using anchors that fold in half to get through the hole and then expand on the other side or would I be using something that just stops in the brick (lag bolts)?

If I attach it to the house, can I get away with using a 2*4 or will I need to use a 4*4 for the hinge base?

If I attach it to the house, should I assume that the bolts that attach the hinge will have to be long enough to go through the post and into brick or will they be ok if they're only in the wood?

Thanks,
Chris

If it were my place, I'd use a dedicated 4" schedule 40 steel post in concrete. You don't want to attach a fence bracket to brick. Also, the stand-alone post lets the house shift independent of the fence - maybe not a problem in your area, but a problem in other areas (like mine).
