Hello,

I got a problem with a Gas Whirpool Dryer that we have used fine for years. It is a Whirlpool Imperial Super Capacity Natural gas dryer, model LG7801xsw1. It worked fine up until a few months ago, when all of a sudden it would on occasion not start, but if you waited a day or two, and try it again it would work with no problems. Then it started to happen more frequently, and at times if you gave the dryer a slight nudge, or turned the timer on and off
a number of times it would start again. Well, 5 days ago, it did the same thing, but now no matter how many times I nudge it or turn the timer nothing. The strange thing is if you turn the timer to "Cool Down Permanent Press" the dryer will start for a few minutes, and then shut off again, and then resart a few minutes later for another run of a few minutes, but it only does this in that randge of the dial. We are starting to think it's haunted. And it does not heat on that particular setting. The drum inside spins fine, and I dont think its a problem with the heater. I can hear a slight buzz comming from the timer when it is on other settings, and a click when I open and shut the door that stops the timer. I have taken the
panels off, and checked all the connections to make sure one did not come loose. When this first started I thought maybe it had something to do with the dryer not being level, thats why when you gave it a nudge it would start again, but I have leveled off the feet on the botton, and nope that wasnt it. Now Im thinking it might be the timer, but I hear it making noise when it is set on a cycle, and it does count down in the "Permanent Press" range of the dial. Id hate to replace parts that may be fine. Any suggestions would be great, we are a family of 5 five, and we got a dirty clothes pile the size of Mt. Rushmore piling up here. HELPP!!!!

Ohh Should mention: Gas turned on-Check,Belt not Broke-Check,PLugged in-Check, Vents clear-Check...

Welcome cddlimited to the Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Trying to sort through all the information provided to determine a possible cause. Difficult because the problem is not constant. Likely the hot surface glow igniter is weak or defective. Also possible the solenoids on top of the gas valve are defective.

Also possible the start button is defective, a rely or the starter windings in the motor are worn out or defective. If the venting system is O Kay and the ducting not bent or restricted or crimped in any way, vent hood flapper door working, etc, likely the HSI and/or solenoids are defective. Need replacing.
