We're in the process of tiling the master bath, which will put the new floor height about 3/4" higher than the existing flange for the toilet. I've read quite a few posts on several boards some recommending a flange extender kit, others suggesting using two stacked wax rings or one of the tall ones.

Wanting to be on the safe side, I went and bought a flange extender kit today, but am having complications... the original flange was installed a half turn from how it should have been, with the toilet bolts coming up through a "slider" type bolt hole rather than the U shaped cutout on each side (sorry, don't know the terminology here). The problem this creates is that either the floor screw holes line up... or the toilet bolt holes do, but not both (without removing and turning the flange or putting the toilet in sideways).

I'm considering using the doubled wax ring method but that sounds a little sketchy to me... thoughts or suggestions anyone?

For 3/4" if regular wax wouldn't still work a doubled will certainly. I don't see why it would be necessary to raise the flange

I doubt your flange was installed incorrectly if you have been using it for any time. The keyway head should be at the 2 oclock position and the keyway should run along the side and terminate slightly below the 3 oclock position, allowing for insertion and sliding of the bowl bolts to the 3 oclock position (and 9 oclock of course). The attachment bolt holes you will use should be in the four corners if you are looking at the toilet straight on. If all this isn't true, you can always drill starter holes in your original flange and screw the new flange in. If you choose not to do the extension thing, use a #11 wax ring with bell. It is a little taller than a #10, and may work just fine. Don't double the rings, though, as they will have a tendency to slide against each other and possibly cause a gas gap.

Thanks for your replys! Larry, On the flange the bolts do come up through the keyways at the correct spot to line up with the holes on the toilet... but the floor screw holes don't line up at the four corners looking at it straight on... more like 1 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 7 o'clock and 10 o'clock, while the screw holes on the flange extender DO line up at the corners. I considered drilling new holes in the plastic flange extenders... I don't want to drill holes in the metal flange for fear of messing it up. I'll go look for a #11 wax ring and see if that will do the trick for me. Thanks again for your help!
