Hi, I'm interested in starting a perennial garden. Is it worth the extra $$ to purchase 2 gal plants vs. 1 gal? Will the 1 gal size grow quickly enough that there's not much difference, or will I get a denser plant if I go with 2 gal? Also appreciate any other advice or links to sites for a beginner.
thx, Don

they both end up being the same size. it just depends on how patient you are. if you want instant beauty, and can afford it, buy the bigger size. if you want to spend as little as possible and are patient, buy the smaller. if you're a gardening magician, like my mom, buy the half-dead clearance stuff at the end of the year, use good soil & fertilize. by next year, they'll all look the same, but my mom will have the most $ left in her pocket!

You could visit a friend's place with a mature perennial garden. Tell them how gorgeous they're garden is, and ask if you could have a few cuttings. People love to share plants!
I have a gorgeous garden now that began from my aunt's garden. Even the smallest roots will be HUGE in a few years. I hope you are patient. It may look silly the first year and half. Free roots are the best- and very rewarding.
