My refrigerator is leaking water from the ceiling, close to the blower. It leaks about 16 ounces a day.

Why is this happening?
How can I fix it?

My primary concern: Is this a fire hazard???

Thanks,
Henry

There are several things that can cause this. Make sure that the thermostat controls for your refrigerator are around mid-range. Also Make sure the refrigerator is leaning backwards slightly. If it still continues to "leak", chances are the defrost drain is clogged. The drain hole is accessed through the back wall in the freezer compartment.

No it is probably not a fire hazard. I don't recall in 30 years in the appliance business a fire starting because of a blocked defrost drain. Yes likely you can fix it. Remove the cover on the back wall of the freezer exposing the evaporator coil and defrost drain. Notice if the coil is covered with ice and frost. If not covered find the drain and pour hot water down it making sure it is free. Replace the cover.

If you don't want to take it apart and have another fridge in the garage or basement, you can just empty it and leave it unpluged with the doors open for a day. Most people don't have the extra room, but it is nice to let it all thaw out and dry up

I have noticed that my side-by-side refrigerator/freezer sweats a lot on the inside when the doors don't close all of the way. Maybe this is something else to check out?

By the way, do you have an ice cube maker?
