Hey guys, first time post here. I have a qusetion in need of more knowledge than I can produce. I am getting a shop built right now and in it I am building a game room. The shop 40'X60' with a concrete foundation which is 6'' thick with a 12'' footer around it. Also it has a footer 12'' thick footer down the center span of 60', and from front to back it has a 12'' footer every 20'. Starting tommarow the building will start to be contructed-40'X60' metal building 16' foot tall side walls. What I am wanting to do is build a wood framed game room 20'X20' inside the building in the back left corner with storage on top. Now my wife wants to put her a "hobby room" on top of that. I guess my main question is how should I go about building the floor for the second story? The second story will be for arts&crafts, some work benches and the like. I want to have plenty of support with NO beams intruding below. I would appreciate any help.:wall:

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you are building a garage for Biltmore Estates. Gee. You will want to use LVL or trus-joist silent floor for ceiling/floor, since you don't want intermediate support. The silent floor can span up to 26 feet. You will need to provide vertical support substantial enough for the second floor, since at least one of your support walls will technically be an interior wall.

Since you will be using this for a floor as well, I would suggest 16"oc. You can go to http://www.ilevel.com/literature/2031.pdf for particular data on the system. Pricing, I really don't know, but it is available by special order through HD. You will want to special order it anyway to have it cut the size you want and have it delivered.
I did some work for them once, and asked how long are the beams. They said 63' long. Why? That's how long a box car is. Otherwise, there is no practical end to the production line. It is continuous.
