We are going to replace a toilet. Went to Home Depot, Lowes guessing best prices and availability there.
We found prices confusing, ranging from around $100 through several hundred, with single peice units and two-peice units.
Came across units with unusual flushing systems.
What does one look for in a toilet and is price an indicator of cosmetics more than quality?
Thanks in advance

You can find quality at a price, you can find less quality at the same price. You can also find fancy stuff that will cost you not only now, but in the future when it needs repair. Simple, nice working toilet is the American Standard Cadet. About $100 and has a Fluidmaster 400A fill-valve. Does all you would expect a toilet to do. Has a 2" discharge opening. Some are as small as 1-1/2" and as big as 2-3/8". Power flush units are nice, until it needs repair. You can also go for a luxury toilet such as Toto. Great toilet and a price to go with it. Just depends on what you want, and what you want to pay. Good luck.

Deja vu all over again, Majak.
I replaced my Mom's toilet (circa 1955) with the Cadet at Majak's recommendation last month and she's very happy. Nice unit for the price (except it would have been nice to have had a "contents" list on the side of the box; bought some installation items that were included).
And btw, don't know about your stores, but the same unit was about $20 cheaper at H-D here than Lowe's.
