I'm currently ripping up the old, ratty carpeting in the living room to put down a floating laminate floor. The house is built slab-on-grade and as soon as I pulled up the old carpeting I started to get whiffs of a urine smell.
Speaking to someone who cleaned the chimney when the previous owners were here-he remembers the owners having a dog. I assume that's where the smell came from (at least I hope so)
Will concrete retain the smell? or is it just the padding underneath and will air out?
What's the best product to use to clean it?

Thank you

If ripping out old carpet & cushion saturated with pet urine & concrete underlayment saturated as well, it is best to tear everything out & apply a couple coats of surface finish concrete sealent to seal odors in before proceeding with floating floor installation. (Follow floating floor manufacturer's instructions for subfloor prep, acclimation, underlayment, and installation instructions to a "T" to maintain warranty.

Seal odors in?!?! Gross! I have worked with a business called Mister Nosey...he has these products that eliminate odors!!! If you are already ripping out the old stuff you can use his product to treat the concrete so that the smell is removed permanently!! We live in an apartment and we had a water pipe bust in my daughters ceiling from the people upstairs. (Long Story..) After the carpet and padding were ripped out we had Mister Nosey treat the concrete for us. All the smells were gone and we have not had a problem since and that was several months ago. Try looking him up on the web - Mister Nosey. He worked for us.

concrete is porous...meaning it will absorb liquids such as urine

It would be impossible to remove 100% of anything unless you replace the slab. Hence why after you clean the concrete you seal the area...preventing more moisture from being absorb and old UNREACHABLE contamination from wicking back to the surface
