Hello all,

I am new to the forum and I recently purchased a 26 year old home. In the garage on the wall adjacent to the fireplace, there was mold growing. I removed the drywall in the area and it revealed rotten studs, sill plate, and joists. Since then, I have properly supported the walls and repaired the damage. The source of the mold and rot is water in the ash pit, alot of water, about 10 inches deep. I pump out the water, cleaned the gutters, and regraded the area outside around the fireplace. We have had 2 serious rain falls, and the water has not returned, not yet, at least. We are planning to install a wood burning stove insert and my questions are:

The firebox is steel and started to rust due to the water in the ash pit, do I have to replace the firebox to install a wood burning stove insert?

Also, since we are installing a stove insert, can I fill and seal the ash pit with concrete?

Thanks in advance for your help.
