This is my first time hooking up a washing machine...so here goes.
I thought that hooking it up would be as easy as screwing on the hot/cold and putting the drain hose from the washer into the hole in the wall. But, my father seems to think other wise. So, rather than do it wrong and have water everywhere, I wanted to see what the experts here thought :)
We have a hose that comes off of the washer that has the curved end to it to go down into the pipe. As far as the house drain goes, there is a wall behind the washer area that has a hole in it (a pipe obviously) that you can tell curves down ward right after it enters the wall, and it has threads on the opening as if to screw a washer hose to it.
What I need to know is, can we just put that hose from the washer into that hole? My dad said that we needed to have some other hose attached to the wall with some kind of curve (pea trap?) at the bottom before it enters the wall. Now, I don't know if there's already one of those in the wall somewhere or not. The house is 50 yr's old, so there's really no telling. I have been in the crawl space and didn't notice anything, but I was focused on repairing the dryer vent, not the washer waste pipe.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, photos, or something, we're tired of going to the laundrymat, especially now that we have a house and we can't hook up our own units!!! Better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks in advance :)

There was not a washer there when we moved in as we purchased the house without a washer and dryer. Had there been one, we would have hooked it up however they had it.
There isn't even anything on the wall that would indicate they had anything else on the wall for the drain.
If you have any suggestions, we would appreciate it. Thanks again.
