My Mother is blind and having a difficult time with the knobs on her oven and washing machine when setting it at a certain temperature or wash cycle. I've looked at many webpages for the blind but can not find help in this area.

My thought was to use small metal or plastic strips and glue them into place on the oven and washer so she can feel her way to the correct position. It would not need to be on all the positions, just the few positions she uses most.

I would like to know what kind of glue would hold metal or plastic strips onto the glass and metal surfaces. Would plastic strips adhere better than metal ones to metal and glass? Thank you.

SaraLee, any good epoxy will work to adhere the metal or plastic strips to the knobs. Make sure all surfaces are clean. If possible sand the surfaces to be adhered. You might check with the manufacturer of the appliances-most used to offer braille knobs for most appliances. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply rodf. I'll try the expoxy glue and probably use thin plastic strips for her to feel as she turns the knobs to it's proper location and glue them on. The brail idea is good but Mom can't read it, so I'll have to improvise.

what about those old fashioned label makers. the ones where a 1/4" wide strip of plastic with adhesive on the back goes through the handheld labeler and as you click each letter it embosses it into the tape? since she couldn't read it, you could just use maybe the capital letter "I", and only print one letter on one strip, and 2 letters "I....I" on another, 3 on the next, etc. then assign each strip a degree on the oven, like the first one with only one "I" is 350 degrees, the "I..I" one is 375, etc.

that's hard to explain. does that make sense?
