My son set up his computer on the solid mahogany dining table. I had no idea that the feet on the keyboard had synthetic materials in the pads that would leave black marks on the table top. Wherever the keyboard rested for a few days, the keyboard feet left black marks. I have read elsewhere that the rubber or plastic feet on computer equipment sometimes have chemicals in them that can permanently discolor the finish. The table top is solid mahogany, and fairly new. In the past I used linseed oil on it to clean it. I have not done anything about the black marks because I don't have a clue as to what product to use, or whether it can even be remedied. The black marks appear to be flush with the finish, and do not seem like a sticky problem. I am afraid to apply anything before getting advice. Has anyone else ever run into this type of problem? Thanks for your help!

not the same problem exactly...but sounds like either adhesive from the feet or soil that was on the feet that was put onto the table top as it was moved around and use...i would try a gentle solvent such as rubbing alcohol..applied to a rag and gently wiping..may work if it does reclean with the lineseed afterwards

Test any solvent first in inconspicuous area. Proceed with caution with alcohol on lacquer finish. Mineral spirits will not harm lacquer finish (use #0000 steel wool if necessary).

It's a very expensive solid mahogany table, about three years old. How can I tell if it has a lacquer finish? What other kind of finish could it have?

Which would be the best to start with, alcohol, or mineral spirits? If I start with mineral spirits and that doesn't work, can I use alcohol on it right after?

using the alcohol after the mineral spirits shouldnt hurt anything if the spirits have no effect on removal

Do not forget to do test in inconspicuous place first, such as beneath the table. Alcohol tends to dissolve lacquer. Most fine furniture finishes today tend to be lacquer.

Is there any way to tell if the table finish is lacquer or not? Can I tell by looking at it? How would I know?

Test in inconspicuous first, such as under the table. Rubbing alcohol will dissolve lacquer and come off on white rag. Mineral spirits will not harm lacquer. Most furniture today tends to have lacquer finish.

So, it sounds as though it would be best to first try out mineral spirits, since mineral spirits won't harm the wood, no matter what the finish?

Then, if that doesn't work, I can try the alcohol in an inconspicuous place under the table, and if it doesn't lift the finish, I can try it on the stains?

Am I absolutely safe trying mineral spirits first?
