i'm putting a shower in my basement. the house builders left a hole in the concrete floor where about 1 foot down is a black plastic pipe that runs horizontally across the hole.
unfortunately, it does not run vertically up the hole with a cap at the top. therefore i am assuming that i must cut the pipe and install some kind of elbow fitting and pipe to run up the hole to where the drain of the shower will be.
is this correct?
i have worked with pvc pipe for my underground sprinklers. is it handled the same way? is there a glue/cement that will fuse the new pipe with the existing?
thank you.

Uh, there's a little more to it than that. Yes, ABS (black plastic drain pipe) does handle in a manner similar to PVC. But if the drain is not installed properly you'll surely have either flooding or clogging or bad-smell problems down the road. Plus there's some water-piping involved.
If you want a trouble-free job that will last for years, then you need a plumber. No offense intended, but your question sounds a little like, "I'd like to replace my brakes, how do I get the wheel off?".
