Hi all,
Got some squeaking I'd like to take care of. Floor is red oak plank, probably 50 years old or so. Some squeaking is occuring and my first action was to use ring shank nails and hope to hit a stud. Well, no such luck. So what's my next step? Seems like the subfloor and the floor need to be pulled together. Maybe screws from the underside? This is the ground floor and the crawl space is accessable. These are not new squeaks; they have been there for a while.
Thanks all !

With 3/4" subfloor you should be able to face nail with flooring cleats, countersink them, and fill holes. If underneath is accessible, perhaps with someone upstairs walking to identify areas of squeaks that shims can be installed between subfloor and joists to minimize or eliminate squeaks where subfloor may not be properly secured to joists.
