I have a carrier gas furnace, and have removed the blower motor/squirrel cage to clean it.

~The label on the motor says "self lubricating" but it seems like not a bad idea to lube it since I have it out of the furnace. True?

~Assuming this is a good idea, what are the lube points for the motor? The motor is GE but I don't see a part number for it- there is a label that is covered by retaining hardware, may be very difficult to get at. The end of the motor has what *appears* to be a bearing cover... do I pry that up?

~The label also says "use 20 weight SAE oil" but I can't find this stuff any where. Is sewing machine oil a substitute?

Thanks!

If the motor is oilable, there should be a small aluminum plug on each end of the motor body. This is removale with a pair of wire cutters to bite into the aluminum & pry out. Don't squeeze so hard as to cut the plug. Sewing machine oil is too light. There is a 3 in 1 oil in a blue, black, & white can which is 20 weight. Also "zoom spout" oil bottles available in most hardware stores, HVAC supply houses, or plumbing supply houses are suitable for electric motors.

Thanks for such a quick reply! I didn't notice your reply at first, since I hadn't seen the new DIY.com format.

I didn't see the aluminum plug, so I'm guessing this is not an oilable motor, and starting to re-install now.

Happy Mothers Day!
