Does all prefinished hardwood flooring have a rounded edge on top? I'm looking for a prefinished hardwood (red oak) that doesn't have that look to it. Are there any brands that more like an unfinished oak floor, that's been sanded and polyurethaned.

I too prefer the more "traditional" look of the square edge flooring. There are many engineered hardwoods with a square edge versus the beveled or eased edge - just ask to see their lines with a square edge.

One advantage of the eased-edge or micro-groove is that it compensates for minor lack of flatness in subfloor. With square-edged flooring, a condition called overboard can occur. This is where the square edge of flooring boards tend to set higher than adjacent boards.

Exactly. Also, most products in the US advertised as square edged prefinished are not going to look like a very expensive, European made square edged floor. Most US made square edged flooring still has some kind of slight roll or smoothed off corner. To do it properly, the flooring blank has to be prefinished first, then T&G with equipment specifically designed for this (can't damage the already prefinished face!). Micro bevels do look nice and certainly hide any overwood. Also, a floor perfectly level and flat with no overwood can still get edges sticking up if boards move with moisture or subfloor settling.

Bruce Coastal Woodlands is a square edge plank, engineered floor. I get to play with some, this week.
