My dishwasher came with my house, which was built in 1979. I'm sure the dishwasher is about that old, as well. We used it, but never really trusted it or expected much out of it. Well, it finally died.

My question...Sears wants $120 to install a new one. Is this something I can do myself, or will I be further ahead to have Sears save me the headaches?

Also, what does one look for in a dishwasher? What features do I want? It's a 24" built in dishwasher, but other than that, I am clueless.

Any help is appreciated...

Dustin - It depends on how handy you are. Replacing a dishwasher is fairly simple since the plumbing and electrical are already in place. I replaced one last year and it took about an hour.
Basically it's just disconnecting the old DW (turn off the power at the CB and the water supply to the DW) electrically and mechanically (water supply and drain). Most are attached by screws to the underside of the countertop. The electrical may be plug in or hard wired. After removing the old DW, it should be a matter of sliding in the new one and remaking the connections.
I suggest visiting the web site for the company that makes the DW that you intend to purchase. Look up the technical documentation for that machine. It will have an installation procedure. If you feel comfortable after reading the procedure - go for it.

Thanks Wayne.

I have the old DW out and sitting on my deck. I am on my way to Sears to get a new one. Since I have no clue what I am buying, this is bound to be a fun trip.

Thanks again, and I'll keep you updated.

Ntrikit, before you get rid of the old one, remove the water supply elbow that the water line hooked up to. They are not included with the new DW. Just unscrew it and when you get the new one, put some teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads and screw it in. Good luck with your project.
