I have just about gotten all of the house done in laminate and was considering doing the stairs in a laminate, but I have decided to do the stairs in a solid wood. If I did the stairs in laminate regardless if I cut the nose of the tread off or built the riser out to square of the tread I am going to lose that much tread. I think that removing that much of the tread will not be safe. Anyways, I was hoping to get some good ideas on where is a good place to buy hardwood(finished or unfinished) tread. Thanks for any ideas.

Check at your local home center or at one of your local flooring dealers.

I checked out both Lowes and Home Depot. I guess what I am looking for is anyone that has bought their boards from an online site or saw mill that got pretty good deals. No offense, but the obvious I have done. I am looking for possibly the not so obvious.

If you live in an area where there are wood mills that manufacture interior trim and hardwood flooring and trim pieces, you should be able to locate what you need. Home centers and flooring dealers tend to be competitively priced. Stairnoses tend to be among the most expensive of flooring trim pieces. You can shop your local yellow pages and online for hardwood flooring dealers. Online dealers tend to charge shipping. It is usually best to purchase your trim pieces where you purchase the flooring, especially in the case of prefinished for the same finish on both.

Just wanted to follow up. I called several local saw mills, and a couple not so local, and they all wanted about the same price as the local Lowes and Home Depot. The funny thing about what I found was I checked out a Lowes store, close to where I work, and another Lowes store, closer to where I live, and there was a $6/board price difference between the stores. If you have a lot of stairs to do, that can add up quick. It can pay to really check things out...
