I put hot plates on the table on the placemat but it did leave a white spot. It is made of cherry wood. I tried a mixture of baking soda and water, but it didn't help.

sounds like the wax or polish was damaged...i would try to clean with a mixture of vinegar and warm water..8oz vinegar/gallon of water...let dry then repolish
