I need help!

We installed a new RUUD system about 2 years ago. It is a combined heat pump with an oil furnace backup. We're pretty certain we got a lemon, as every season change, it has been non-functional and we've had to get a technician in to work on it. Now we have a new twist... We turned on the cooling, and I think it ran for several days. One night we woke up in the middle of the night sweating. Went to check on the A/C just to find that the furnace was running, extremely hot air was blowing, and it was a toasty 79 degrees. Double checked. The thermostat was set on cooling to 72 degrees. Turned it off. Furnace kept going. Had to hit the emergency off to power it down. Had a tekkie out to look at it. He thought maybe an animal had chewed on the wires and something got crossed, even though he saw no crossed lines. Powered the system up, and it worked just fine.

Since then, this has happened two more times, and always during the night. Tekkie just left for the second time. This time he disconnected the oil furnace so it can't get a signal to start. He thinks perhaps a relay is sticking, but doesn't really know.

So, anyone seen anything like this before? Any suggestions? I'm about to have the hole thing ripped out and either a Trane or Carrier installed as I'm royally ticked at RUUD. Any help at all would be most appreciated.

Seems the contractor didn't leave the literature. All I have are his receipts, which of course have none of this info. GRR. Got this off the furnace and thermostat:

RUUD Achiever oil furnace, model ROBC-084QBEA
Manufactured by Rheem. It has:
Beckett oil burner, AFG series
Honeywell Intermittent Ignition, R8184G1427

RUUD Thermostat, T874R1434

I'll have to get the heat pump info when I return. It's dark and I have to leave for work.

Thanks for your help!

P.S. Wasn't sure which forum was appropriate for this topic since it seems to straddle several. Sorry if I posted it in the wrong place. :(

sounds to me like your being cheated on there are a lot of crooked repair people out there we had the same thing happen with a gas dryer the same guy kept coming out replacing part after part and the thing kept quitting i think theres a lemon law out there that if the same problem keeps getting fixed and is not helping you can repot it to who i don't know try the BBB.

Laurat: Call the installing company and speak to the owner. Explain in detail the problems you are having and that the techs they are sending out cannot figure out the problem and that you need this issue cleared up so that you can go on with life. He may not be aware of the ongoing call backs.

Unfortunately the guy who is trying to fix it IS the owner. It's a really small company. I don't think he's shady. The last few visits he hasn't charged me for labor. I think he understands that we've gotten a raw deal. BUT, it's not clear if the problem is the unit or if he is technically inept. Just don't know.

Here's the heat pump info:

RUUD Achiever 10 SEER
Model # UPKA-031JAZ

Sorry for the delay. We got a bad storm here and had to wait for it to clear to go out to the heat pump. Boy, the ground is soggy!

Take the stat cover off and post what connections you have in there. We will have you remove the wires that control the furnace and see if it still kicks on.
