When I turn on my shower, too much water comes out of the faucet in addition to the shower head. Consequently, the water pressure coming out of the shower head is not that great. Any ideas on what I can do?

I have a single knob tub faucet.

Your diverter is not sealing properly. Where is it located? It could be on the spout or on the control valve. If on the spout, you could remove the spout by unscrewing it and cleaning it out or replacing it. If on the control valve, you will have to turn the water off, remove the cover and then the diverter, removing any trash that may have accumulated on it, and possibly replacing any rubber part that may be deteriorated.

Is the water that should not be coming out, coming out of what you call the "faucet", or the tub spout?

If it is the diverter spout...you need a new spout.

If it is indeed from what you call the "faucet", then you could see if you can tell us what brand name it is. Some single handle mixer valves have a cartridge and some have little springs and washerless cups and other seals.

It's also conceivable that you could have a double whammy, and the shower head has particles in it. You can unscrew it off the chrome shower arm pipe and look in the back side of it and see if it has rust particles or ? clogging it up.

The diverter is on the spout so I will unscrew it and take a look. Thanks for your replies, it's a big help!

Check under the spout near the wall. If there is a slot there, you will have to remove/loosen an allen set-screw. There are "O" rings holding the spout on so it will take some twisting and pulling. If no slot, it just unscrews. Good luck.
