The room in question is the second floor of a 100 year old farmhouse about 16' by 24'. The current floor is tongue and groove pine 3/4 by 3 1/4 laid directly on 2x8 joist on 16" centers. The floor is perpendicular to the joist, even and structually sound. Can I lay new 3/4 hardwood also running perpendicular to the joist directly on this old floor? Should there be anything between them? thank-you, one with the face of a rat.
