i am planning to replace my ceramic tile tub surround w/a fiberglass 3pc unit. i have heard both ways as to installing over exisiting tile..some say yes.some no. if i install over tile would i still use LN for surrounds. if i take tile off i will probably just take walls out up to a certain point. what product would you recommend as a backing then. also any other helpful hints or advice would be welcome...thanks

If you 3 piece unit requires backing then I would use greenboard or durorock for the application.

I believe most of the surround manufacturers, as well as the adhesive instructions, recommend NOT putting on tile. I think it has to do with curing of the adhesive on a non-porous substrate.

The problem I have ran into with surrounds over tile is the new surround wall is only as good as the adhesive holding the old tile to the wall. You can peel a new surround off when it is attached to old tile.
Not my house or project, but it's just a little more work and either greenboard or Durock as Dunbar stated will cost under $40, tops. Cheap insurance when looking at other options.
