Air Conditioning - Window Unit Freezes

I was just wondering about a window unit that i used to have i think it had a leak when i got it it a few trys before the compresser to kick on and if it had a real nasty habit of freezing up and spraying water everywere this year i went to start it to see if it still worked just in case i needed a backup window unit and the commpresser hum it sounded like this DON'T LAFE AT MY SOUND AFECTS............ :o HUMMMMMMMMMM...........HUMMMMMMMMM....................HUMMMMMMMMM......... and so on but would not start could it be it leaked all the coolent out it and was out of freon or was the commpresser bad it was an older GE carry cool i don't have at any more i was just wondering about it.

I think the humming sound you experience now is a seperate issue from the freezing-up problem.

Before blaming the compressor, everything else needs to be checked. A compressor non-start could be just a bad capacitor. A good tech could tell you quickly.

The freezing-up could be as simple as a dirty filter and/or coil. A leaking system that is low on freon may be another possibility.

In many cases it cheaper to replace a window unit instead of repairing it.
