For an automatic sprinkler system, what is the best way to water shrub areas.

I am planning on pop-ups or rotors for the lawn but Im not sure of the shrubs.

I see the drip irrigation but it seems like that is best for an area where all shrubs/plants are in a straight line. In a shrub area the plants are staggered to look better so would a drip system be best?

Any thoughts?

no pop-ups for shrubs, use a poly-hose 1/2 " with microtubing ( 1/4 " ) for each shrub and a dripper attached to each line, hose should be 4 " underground, use a pressure regulator and a filter in the valve used to control drip system, all parts are cheap and sold at your local nursery.

so, you run the line so that it runs through the shrub area and the 1/4 are offshoots leading to each shrub. (if things are inline you use more than one dripper (emitter?) on the 1/4 line.

Is that correct?

use one dripper per plant, yes you attach the 1/4 " microtube ( called " spaghetti " line ) to the 1/2 " polyhose using like I said 1 dripper per plant, dripper head of your choice there are some adjustables some low delivery etc, it doesn't matter which as long as you compensate with running time on your timer.
