I hit a rock with a SImplicity 5hp tiller. When I pull the starter it seems to spin freely-as thought there is no load on it-no compression....
I have spark... (i am pretty sure I do-I did not see it, but felt it:))
Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

It should be coincidental that striking a rock with a belt-primary-drive-type system would create such a shock that the connecting rod would break. It sure sounds as though the rod did break as it appears you no longer have compression. You will want to remove the cylinder head to be certain. You can then watch the action of the piston and valves as you manually rotate the engine through a complete cycle (two full crankshaft (flywheel) rotations).
