Hello !! My soil is light clay sandy type. Every year my tomatos start out growing great. But as they mature they get some kind of spots on them and then begin to rot. Wondering if i'm not putting the right stuff to them or what. Usually i just add a little 8-8-8 fertilizer to them 2 or 3 times thru maturity..I seem to always have a nice tomato bush but not tomatos...Thanks, Oren

It's called Blossom end rot. It is caused by a Calcium deficiency. I add powdered calcium in each hole when I plant. I also use 9-12-12 fertilizer on my plants according to the label directions. Water after fertilizing. make sure your plants get 1" of water a week. Good luck.

The plants or the fruit get spots? Spots on the fruit could be anthracnose or if its one enlargening spot on the blossom end this is blossom end rot. It is caused more by poor watering practices that it is by a calcium deficiency but this may contribute. Tomatoes need to dry out between waterings.

Almost forgot to mention...My water melons also have a similar problem, they always seem to start rotting on the end opposite the feeding vine before maturity...Could this also be a lack of calcium. I've heard of calcium nitrate, is this the same thing that you are talking about...Thanks much...........Oren

I suspect inconsistent watering. There is a spray product to solve the calcium deficiency problem.

What is the recommended watering pattern?
It gets real hot here in Houston, so I water every 1-2 days because the soil really dries out. Is this too frequent?
