well, i've never used one, but i saw one. i think it's 3 or 4 prongs that grab the plate from behind like fingers, all connected in the middle by springs. then you hang it from something in the middle part.

is that how yours looks?

Unfortunately like Carla i have never hung a plate myself, but my gran and my aunt both have a lot of plates hanging up so i do know a bit about it.

There should be two set of two claws that extend to opposite sides from the center area. These are joined in the middle by a central spring which keep the claws tight around the plate. In the central region where the two sets come together with the spring there should be a hook or a piece of metal that protrudes and can hold the apparatus onto a hook in the wall. The claws should be positioned so that they are evenly spread around the circumference of the plate. This gives the greatest support and decreases the chance of a fall as far as possible. Typically the device is colored white so it doesnt detract from the plate, but there are sure to be some available in other colors if thats what you would like.

I hope this helps you carla
